Re: QGroundControl with GPS AR Drone 2 - Global/Abs. Alt, Global/Rel. Alt, Local (NED)

Hi. The thread is few months old. I have come across info with re to this matter in the mean time on drone-forum.com  It seems the AR Drone 2 does not "know" there are hills or valleys in its path. It does have some sort of altimetry cause I could see the details, read from the drone, of absolute altitude (above sea level) in QGC. But it normally flies considering the take off point as a reference altitude, then it "thinks" the terrains around it are flat. This changes when landing, bottom sensors taking over.

Generally it might destabilise during flight if flying close to the ground (few metres) across uneven terrain, cause the bottom sensors and camera might conflict with the altitude set in the flight plan. Or so it seems. You also have to check your EPH or HDOP: https://youtu.be/sEYshX4Pfbg or your drone won't know its GPS coordinates. I have also learned in the mean time that setting a high turning speed (when changing direction during GPS flight) and setting sharp turning angles at waypoints can destabilise the drone quite a bit, possibly hitting its own prop wash on turning. For rotation speed etc see the AR Drone 2 PDF user guide on the download section of this forum.

Re: QGroundControl with GPS AR Drone 2 - Global/Abs. Alt, Global/Rel. Alt, Local (NED)

Hey, have you figured it out?

I just bought the drone, I haven't been able to use qGroundControl 1.1.0 properly so far (the drone won't stick to the route...), but I am going to try again, because I am really interested in this feature.

I sometimes use the drone close to some hills, so I think I will do some altitude tests asap.

QGroundControl with GPS AR Drone 2 - Global/Abs. Alt, Global/Rel. Alt, Local (NED)

Hello, I've been playing with QGroundControl V1.1.0 (cannot get and edit general and advanced parameters of the drone with later versions - v2 - of QGC). I'm just wondering whether Global/Abs. Alt, Global/Rel. Alt, Local (NED) work according to their names? Can the GPS AR Drone get the altitude (above sea level) together with other GPS parameters? If I send the drone 20m let's say above a 50m high hill will it "know" from its GPS location that there's a 50m hill there? Or will it know from its bottom sensors? What abt when flying over buildings? Will it know the absolute altitude from GPS location or will try to go even higher, considering the roof of the building as the land underneath?
